The equation governing ideal clocks in a gravitational field is treated, with attention given to the question whether an equation governing clocks is dependent on the other laws of physics. Also considered is whether evidence exists that clocks measure proper time. The possibility of generalizing the equation for the time (ds) in a gravitational field, which, measured by ideal clocks, is proper time according to the assumptions of the majority of current theories of gravity is discussed.
