The Galactic center (GC) offers an unique opportunity to study in detail the processes which dominate the heating and the chemistry of the molecular gas in galactic nuclei. Within ~200 pc of the dynamical center of the Galaxy, in the molecular zone, there are a variety of very energetic phenomena like Supernovae, non-thermal filaments, large scale shocks, large photodissociation regions illuminated by clusters of massive stars, and strong high-energy
emission. These phenomena have different effects on the ionization, physical conditions, and the chemistry of the molecular clouds in the GC. The GC provides an excellent laboratory to understand the physical and chemical properties of molecular clouds in such a harsh environment, which are very relevant to understand the molecular emission observed from extragalactic nuclei with different activities. I will present recent progress on the study of the ionized and molecular gas in the molecular zone of the GC with emphasis on the Circumnuclear Disk around the black hole. The dense molecular gas component shows a very rich chemistry with widespread large abundances of complex organic molecules and molecular ions. The chemical complexity found in the GC will be discussed in the context of chemistry driven by UV, X-ray and cosmic ray radiations and shocks.
