The strong emission source Arp 220 is characterized on the basis of published data (including IRAS observations) and blue-green and near-IR (720-900-nm) images obtained with a CCD camera on the 24-inch telescope at Whipple Observatory in May, 1984. Analysis of smoothed and composite images reveals that Arp is a single galaxy crossed by a prominent dust lane, a picture consistent with an M82-like starburst system having intense OH maser emission (Baan et al., 1982). In this model the IR emission (50 times that of the Galaxy at all wavelengths) is the result of bursts of star formation rather than of the collision of two galaxies.
