The rotation velocity of the B8 V primary of Algol is estimated on the basis of observations of the 587.5-nm line of He I, obtained using a coude Reticon with slit width 330 microns, resolution 32 pm, and signal/noise ratio 300 on the 2.7-m reflector at McDonald Observatory on three nights (corresponding to three difference phases of Algol) in November 1983, and February and March 1984. The data-analysis procedures are described in detail, and the equatorial rotation velocity is estimated as 49 + or - 3 km/s using the inclination (82.4 deg) given by Wilson et al. (1972). This velocity is in good agreement with the synchronous velocity (52 + or - 3 km/s), suggesting that the rotation of the Algol primary is indeed synchronous.
