Deep UV and red Schmidt plates of the intermediate age (turnoff mass of about 5 solar masses), rich southern cluster NGC 2516 have been searched for faint blue objects as white dwarf candidates. It is found that NGC 2516 contains at least three hot (Teff greater than 30,000 K), young white dwarf members. The gravity and luminosity of these young white dwarfs consistently require masses between 0.95 and 1.17 solar mass. This is the first direct observation that high-mass progenitor stars (M equals 50 to 8 solar masses) leave massive WD remnants. The maximum initial mass of white dwarf progenitors is found to be 8 + 3, -2 solar masses, 6 solar masses being a firm lower limit.
