The optical, X-ray, and radio properties of four clusters of galaxies with the best-documented cases of radio halo emission are examined. The clusters studied are the Coma cluster, Abell 2255, Abell 2256, and Abell 2319. The clusters are found to exhibit the following morphological similarities: (1) all are rich compact clusters of late to intermediate B-M type with very low fractions of spiral galaxies; (2) all contain several active radio galaxies, and their total discrete-source radio luminosity is not unusual; and (3) all are strong and very extended X-ray sources. These characteristics are shown to imply that the clusters may be in an unusual state characterized by a large and homogeneous distribution of hot gas in the intracluster medium, as is required by the various models for radio halo emission.
