The authors show that spectroscopic observations of the magnetic white dwarf in AM Herculis obtained in 1979 when the system was in a low state indicate that the magnetic field geometry is different from that of a centred dipole. A model based on an offset dipole field geometry gives reasonable agreement with observations and suggests that the magnetic field at the accreting pole may be significantly lower (≡1.4×107G) than has previously been assumed.
