The results of the first measurements of the polarization of light from background stars passing through B361 are described. Nearly all the stars show that the direction of the polarized light is approximately north-south. If the polarization is caused by aligned grains within the globule, then a magnetic field of the order of 50-100 micron-G is required. Both polarimetry and photometry confirm that two of the stars studied are very distant background stars, while three of these stars were found to be foreground stars. The present analysis indicates that the globule is not further away than 650 pc, but can only establish an approximate upper limit. This uncertainty in the data similarly affects all the other conclusions, and it is very desirable that confirmation of these observations be obtained.
