A detailed mineralogical and microprobe analysis of eight H-group and L-group chondrites of various petrological types is presented. On the basis of the composition and structural characteristics of the chondrites, three main pyroxene phases were identified: (1) orthopyroxenes (2) low-Ca clinopyroxenes; and (3) high-Ca pyroxenes composed of diopside-augile material. The interrelationships between the different pyroxene phases and the chondrite types are discussed in detail. Partition ratios between Fe(+) and Mg are estimated for coexisting orto- and clinopyroxene phases in the chondrites, and the equilibration temperatures were calculated. On the basis of the experimental results, some possible candidates for chondrite parent bodies are identified.
