A survey is made of the current understanding of the character of the planet Mercury, most of which has its basis in observations conducted by the three Mariner mission flybys in 1974 and 1975. Because Mariner images of the planet showed a heavily cratered surface similar to that of the moon, little interest was aroused and Mercury has remained unexplored. Attention is given to the disproportionately large metallic core of Mercury, its linear surface features, very tenuous atmosphere, and remaining obstacles to further exploration.
