Cosmic Rays: Origin, Cosmic Rays: Detectors

Scientific paper

Cosmic ray particles with energies up to 3×1020eV have been observed. Neither their origin nor their nature are known. The Pierre Auger Observatory will address this problem. It is a large air shower detector, designed to measure the spectrum of cosmic rays above 1019GeV, and to determine their arrival direction and chemical composition.
