The problem of an adequate description of the surface and the gravitational field of the planets is discussed with the help of an expansion in spherical and other functions. It is justified and shown by a numerical example that the application of regression modeling permits obtaining expansions with approximately one-half as many terms as in the usual approach with the same or higher accuracy of description. Investigations on the selection of an effective procedure of searching for the optimal model and on the problem caused by the large dimensionality of the problems and the diversity of alternative initial data sets are briefly described.
