The radio galaxy 3C 459 has been mapped at 2, 6, and 20 cm using the Very Large Array. It shows a triple structure of total extent 29 kpc, with the western lobe being 5.5 times as far from the core as the eastern lobe. Only the western lobe is highly polarized, suggesting that the eastern lobe may be depolarized by an interstellar medium in the host galaxy of 3C 459. The compact radio core has a steep spectrum and may be similar to the optically unidentified steep-spectrum core sources. Analysis of published absorption-line data yields a spectral type of F for the host galaxy, much earlier than expected for a typical elliptical galaxy and the earliest type known for a powerful radio galaxy. As suggested in the literature, starlight accounts for a significant amount of the optical continuum radiation. Despite the early spectral type, the colors are not consistent with a normal spiral galaxy. Therefore, 3C 459 may be an elliptical galaxy that has undergone a large amount of fairly recent star formation.
