Fatigue is an unavoidable effect in all photomultiplier tubes. We have conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the importance of fatigue as a source of error in astronomical pulse-counting photometry. We find that astronomers using common photometric practices can expect fatigue to introduce unpredictable errors which may approach the 1 % level. Normal calibration techniques can not remove these errors, and often can not detect their presence. We suggest one possible scheme that observers might use to monitor for the presence of fatigue during an observing run.
