The advantages and disadvantages of using a metal gallium target in a gallium solar neutrino experiment are briefly reviewed, and a pilot gallium-germanium installation using 7 tons of gallium metal is described. In particular, attention is given to the chemical procedure, the counting system, and preliminary results of Ge-71 and Ge-69 yields from cosmic rays. Finally, the possibility of conducting a calibrating experiment using a metal target and a chromium neutrino source produced from enriched chromium is considered.
