The author discusses recent radio continuum observations of comet 1983d (IRAS-Araki-Alcock). The available evidence suggests that the size of the source of continuum emission is approximately 100 km. Models invoking emission due to mm-sized grains have difficulty in accounting for the observed flux because such particles either evaporate or are swept out of the beam on a time scale of approximately a day. An alternative is that the emission is due to a large number of roughly meter-sized boulders distributed in a "halo" approximately 100 km in size around the cometary nucleus. These boulders could also contribute to the observed radar echo.
