The present investigation is concerned with a model of a star-forming region with negative and positive feedback mechanisms. The three components of the model include cool H I gas, dusty molecular gas, and young stars with their associated H II regions. Attention is given to star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM), stellar evolution with mass loss, the synthesis of molecules, aspects of numerical analysis, and observational evidence. It is shown that star formation can be controlled by positive feedback mechanisms as a consequence of the intrinsic instability of gravitationally driven cloud processes and the interaction of young stars with the interstellar medium.
