Multitaper power spectra show greatly reduced noise compared to single taper spectra, such as periodograms. We performed a random-restart test to show that multitaper spectra do not bias the fitted mode parameters. Then, we show a different way to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of spectra by calculating interleaved shifted cross-spectra. Finally, we start exploring the Hilbert spectral analysis which is a tool to localize events in time-frequency space.
