Observations of molecular line emission in circumstellar envelopes around AGB and post-AGB stars are the best tool to measure a number of circumstellar gas parameters: total mass, present or past mass-loss rate, expansion velocity, shape, chemical composition, etc. In this review, I discuss basic results and relevant recent work on this topic. Both observational data and theoretical analysis are reviewed. The reliable determination of some parameters and recent work on SiO masers are in particular discussed.
