In this contribution, we present recent results from a study of the ISO/SWS spectra of a sample of O-rich AGB stars. Analysis of the molecular bands in the 2.3 - 8 μm region reveals an onion-like layering of the circumstellar matter in the extended atmosphere. The presence of an optically thick water layer for Mira variables is the most essential characteristic. We furthermore present an overview of the dust features observed in the 8 - 27 μm range of these spectra, tentatively identify one of the features with MgFeO and discuss the identification of other features with Al2O3 grains and spinel.
