As gravitational-wave data from ground-based interferometers become available, questions related to the astrophysical interpretation of these data become more and more important. In this talk I will review ways of using gravitational-wave observations to constrain astrophysical models of source properties, mainly focusing on stellar populations relevant to both high- and low-frequency gravitational waves. I will also discuss the importance of carefully modeling observational selection effects and the possible biases such effects introduce to observational samples.
