The detection of orphan optical afterglows is expected to provide a very valuable contribution to the GRB analyses since the rate of such events may exceed the GRB rate, hence improved statistics may be expected. We describe and discuss a project based on the analyses of selected deep archival photographic plates to search and to study such events. We show that e.g. the UKSTU archive contains suitable sequences of deep (limiting magnitude 19-23) photographic plates with good sampling inside a two week period and taken in various filters. A suitable strategy for searches for orphan afterglows is presented and discussed, including methods for their verification and distinguishing from other highly variable astrophysical objects such as supernovae etc. The scientific aspects of such analyses are also addressed.
