History tells us that the growth in our understanding of planets, both in the Solar System and around other stars, has dramatically depended on the availability of increasingly powerful instrumentation. A look at the future indicates that this same trend will need to be maintained to gain the insights we seek on the origins and evolution of planetary systems and the fraction that might sustain habitable planets.
