This review seeks to provide the background material necessary to understand the newest developments in the study of brown dwarfs. I describe the physical and observational properties of low mass stars and brown dwarfs, and discuss our ability to distinguish between them. Other topics include atmospheric variability in the form of magnetic activity and weather, and the mass function and local density of brown dwarfs in the solar neighborhood. The connection between brown dwarfs and planets will be covered in the companion review paper on extrasolar planets.
