The past three decades have seen much progress in the construction of analytic and numerical dynamical models of galaxies. Idealized spherical and axisymmetric models with restrictions on the velocity anisotropy have been replaced by fully general triaxial models which are now able to fit not only the observed surface brightness distribution of early-type galaxies but also all velocity information provided by modern spectrographs. This makes it possible to dissect nearby galaxies and identify their distinct dynamical components which in turn can be linked to the properties of the stellar populations and the formation history. The lecture will summarize this development, and will touch on the measurement of central black hole masses and the role of multiple stellar components in early-type galaxies.
