The problem of explaining the X-ray emission from supernova 1987A, in particular the emission below 10 keV, is discussed. It is suggested that the emission 1987A is due to the young neutron star being cocooned in matter from a binary companion. The remnant must therefore contain large holes which can explain the early detection of gamma rays and hard X-rays without requiring that the Ni was mixed throughout the ejecta. It is predicted that the X-ray emission will remain at roughly the same level for a long time, with flares, dips, and eclipses possible.
