The possible use of radio stars in astronavigational systems to provide global, all-weather navigational capability is discussed. A list of available radio sources is presented, noting that pulsars would be unsuitable for use in navigation. The signal from the radio star would be used to determine its elevation and a line of position would be derived so that the star would operate as a radio sextant. It is found that a radio sextant would be capable of operation to its full potential only by platforms conforming to several prerequisites. It is concluded that a radio star based system would have medium accuracy and would be advantageous for military applications due to its immunity to disruption.
