Wave modes as observed in the solar wind are discussed using plasma theoretical methods. The wave methods and Doppler shift were computed using known plasma parameters. In order to determine the frequency of a wave mode in a plasma-fixed coordinate system from measured frequency data, a special representation, alpha-beta diagrams for lines of constant frequency, was used. The results facilitate the identification of wave modes in the solar wind plasma as measured aboard a spacecraft like Helios.
