Olbers' paradox and Seeliger's paradox are the two main arguments for the finite world model. The cosmic background radiation is evidence for the theory of big bang. But this paper holds that the logical premises of these paradoxes are wrong, and that the cosmic background radiation originates from cosmic dust.
In Seeliger's paradox, it is assumed that universal gravitation effect is an ``instantaneous'' effect. It is wrong. If we suppose that gravitation effect is a ``retarded effect'', the intensity of gravitational field can be calculated from Newton's universal gravitation law, giving a definite value which agrees with observations.
An assumption essential to Olbers' paradox is that light of stars is not absorbed by stars, or by cosmic dust. It is obviously wrong. Taking into account the absorption by stars and cosmic dust, the radiant intensity of the sky is 2.05 (-9) W.cm-2, while the observed value is 2.06 (-9) W.cm-2.
The universe is an infinite and open system. It cannot reach a state of thermal equilibrium. But on large scales, dynamic equilibrium is possible. According to the condition of dynamic equilibrium of cosmic dust, the temperature of cosmic dust can be calculated to be 2.9 ~ 3.1 K, which is in agreement with the observed temperature of cosmic background radiation.
