We propose to acquire high-resolution optical spectra of a sample of bright weak-lined T Tauri stars in the Upper Scorpius association, using the Echelle Spectrograph on the CTIO Blanco 4m telescope. Our objective is to search for radial velocity variations in our sample, in an effort to find very close-in, low-mass stellar and substellar companions. Our observations should reveal double-line and single-line spectroscopic binaries with (Delta)v_rad ≳ 10 km s^-1 immediately; long-term monitoring will allow detection of v_rad variations of ~ 2 km s^-1. Our goal is to investigate the origins of the `brown dwarf desert' (absence of substellar companions at separations ≲ 4 AU around solar-type stars) that is observed in the field. We also wish to explore the (currently unknown) fraction of very close binaries in Upper Scorpius, in order to set more stringent constraints on theoretical HR diagrams for very young pre-Main Sequence objects. This is part of a radial velocity survey of PMS objects we expect to continue over the next several years.
