Recent observations have revealed the presence of a number of ~ 10-Myr-old stars (of which TW Hya and HD 98800 are the best known) at a distance of only ~ 50 pc. These observations suggest that there may be previously unrecognized pre-main-sequence stars near the Sun, either in a distributed population or in small clusters that are no longer associated with molecular gas. We have recently completed the first phase of a survey to search for additional stars in this population using candidates selected based on chromospheric activity (from the ROSAT Bright Source Catalog) and HR-diagram position (from the Hipparcos Catalog); this survey has yielded discovery of a number of previously unknown pre-main-sequence stars closer than 100 pc. We propose here to conduct follow-up observations around the newly- discovered young stars from the first phase of the survey; these ``phase two'' spectroscopic observations would be a search for additional, fainter young stars to see if the young stars discovered so far are members of young associations. Unlike most previous searches for isolated young stars, our selection method is not biased in favor of stars with disks. Thus, young stars found in this survey are a useful sample for studying disk evolution in the crucial planet-building phase at ages of 10-100 Myr. The relative nearness of these stars allows detection of tenuous disks that were undetectable by IRAS and may in the future allow imaging of disks or substellar companions.
