The relative importance of cosmogonic processes and resonance effects on the Saturn rings are analyzed in the light of current observational and theoretical results. A comparison is made with the asteroid belt, and Kirkwood gaps in the ring system are considered. The main A, B, C and D ring features identified, and a possible resonance effect with the axial rotation of Saturn is examined. The brightness of the A and B rings is analyzed.
