Historical developments concerning the concept of stellar populations are examined, taking into account the existence of two types of stars recognized by Baade (1944) and studies conducted by Hoyle and Schwarzschild. Approaches used in the current subdivision of the stellar populations in the Galaxy are considered. Questions related to the populations and the development of the Galaxy are discussed along with the populations in extragalactic systems. Attention is given to elliptical galaxies, spiral galaxies, irregular galaxies, and contradictions between certain observational data and theory.
