It has been suggested recently that the apparent discrepancy between the star formation history of the Universe and measurements of the stellar mass density at high redshift may be reconciled by invoking an IMF that evolves with redshift. While this is an intriguing possibility, I show that the available data suggest that there is a general agreement between the star formation and stellar mass histories, once certain important systematic effects are taken into account, including the variation of dust attenuation with luminosity, the stellar mass in UV faint galaxies, and the evolution of L* of the UV luminosity function.
