It is shown that corpuscular streams themselves are not geoactive (i.e., they do not cause geomagnetic storms) since they increase only the flow velocity, which is not reflected in the parameters of geomagnetic activity. However, certain zones in a corpuscular stream and the region of the undisturbed solar wind adjacent to it are geoactive. These zones are shown to arise as a result of deceleration of the stream plasma by the slower solar-wind plasma and to be characterized by enhanced proton density, increased variations in the interplanetary magnetic field, and increased values in the southern part of the field's meridional component. It is concluded that the earth's entry into such a zone gives rise to a characteristic phase or stage of a geomagnetic storm.
