Viking and Mariner missions have established that the Martian moon Phobos is a low albedo, low density object with a thick regolith. The composition of the surface material is unknown but the possible compositions include material analogous to carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, altered ordinary chondrite meteorites, Mars ejecta, cosmic dust, or Deimos ejecta. The position of Phobos in the Martian gravity system products a uniquely intense regolith environment for a small body that may systematically alter the albedo and spectral signature of the original surface material. The Soviet Phobos mission will study the surface composition with a variety of remote sensing instruments. This new influx of data should provide important constraints on the origin of Phobos.
