Scientific paper

Aspects of Japan's Planet-A interplanetary probe, which will carry out scientific missions related to Halley's Comet, are discussed. The probe is to be boosted by the Mu-3U rocket, an improved version of the Mu-3S. Orbital parameters corresponding to the two launch dates being considered (March 1985 and August 1985) are presented. The S-band communications subsystem of the probe is described, as is the antenna subsystem, which is to consist of a high gain antenna, a medium gain antenna, and one or two omnidirectional low gain antennas. Data on the power subsystem and control subsystem are included. The structure of the spacecraft is shown diagramatically, and a weight breakdown of the various elements is included.
