Observations of the N galaxy 3C 371 with the Lick Observatory image-tube scanner show that the spectrum has three components: the stellar absorption lines of an E galaxy, a power-law continuum of index -1.35, and a weak emission-line spectrum qualitatively similar to those observed in some giant E and radio galaxies. The derived contribution of the galaxy component is in excellent agreement with that obtained earlier by Sandage (1967) from different considerations. Comparison with the spectrum of NGC 1052 indicates that the galaxy associated with 3C 371 may be metal-poor. Measurements of the polarization show that it is high and variable on a time scale of a day. It is concluded that 3C 371 is an intermediate object with features observed in giant E galaxies, highly variable QSOs, and BL Lacertae objects.
