A careful examination is made of the structure of the progenitor of SN 1987A, presumed to be SK -69°202. Self-consistent models which match the observational constraints of SK -69°202 suggest that if the hydrogen envelope has a solar composition, X ≈ 0.7 - 0.75, the progenitor of SN 1987A must have undergone essentially no mass loss, or have lost nearly all the hydrogen-rich envelope leaving ⪉0.1 M_sun;. With envelopes of small mass, both the core and the envelope are shocked to excessive velocities, and hence such models can be ruled out. The large mass envelopes are difficult to reconcile with growing evidence for composition pecularities and helium enrichment. Helium-rich envelopes can be of moderate mass, without violating conditions of self-consistency. Three different structures are found for models with constant luminosity, total mass, core mass, and core radius as the effective temperature is varied. Two of these solutions can correspond to effective temperatures in the range pertinent to SK -69°202, although one may be unstable.
