The authors propose a class of models in which the intensity and spectrum of the X-ray background radiation between 0.2 and 160 keV can be produced by active galactic nuclei. The key assumption of these models is that the spectra of active galactic nuclei are not described by a single power law. No evolution of the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei is required.
