A model is proposed for active galactic nuclei in which a massive central star cluster builds up and feeds a central black hole as a result of mass loss during post-main-sequence stellar evolution. The starting point for the specific model treated here is a coeval stellar cluster of 4×109M_sun; within the central ≡10 pc, possibly formed as the result of a starburst in the central region of the galaxy. A model for stellar evolution is developed to predict both the number of post-main-sequence stars as a function of time and the stellar mass-loss rate (which determines the central accretion rate and luminosity). At all times between 107 and 109yr, this accretion luminosity exceeds the nuclear energy generation rate from stars by factors of 50 - 25 assuming a standard 10% efficiency for the black hole luminosity. These times are similar to those inferred for the typical lifetime of AGNs and quasars. A scenario for formation of the massive central star cluster based on galactic interactions and mergers is also presented.
