Observations of gamma Cyg are reported which were made with the Copernicus UV spectrometer in the ranges from 2558 to 2600 A and 2765 to 2805 A at a resolution of 0.4 A. The absorption lines, including the Mg II doublet, were identified on the basis of previous tables of UV spectral lines and multiplets. The spectra are shown to indicate an overabundance of rare earths, which could be explained by supernova-companion genesis. However, no connection can be demonstrated between gamma Cyg and the so-called gamma-Cyg supernova remnant, especially since no UV spectral evidence is found for mass ejection from the star.
