The fluctuations of internal temperatures of interstellar dust grains caused by the absorption of photons from the interstellar radiation field and collisions with the hot component of the interstellar gas are treated by means of a probability distribution function. A method is presented to compute this probability for a given heating mechanism and a given model for the dust grains. The resulting integral equation is discussed for the idealized case of particles emitting and absorbing radiation like gray bodies. Numerical results are given for a monochromatic and a black-body radiation field.
