The radiation field in dust clouds is computed as a function of cloud extinction using the Monte Carlo method and recent results for the scattering properties of grains. The solution is used to recalculate the photodissociation lifetimes for a number of molecules in interstellar dust clouds. The results show that shielding by dust is not as efficient as commonly believed. For molecules in dense dark clouds, lifetimes are obtained which are typically shorter than the lifetimes obtained in the earlier calculations of Stieff et al. (1972) by a factor of about 10.000. Some comments are made concerning the theory of Watson and Salpeter (1972) concerning molecule formation on surfaces of interstellar grains.
