A brief historical review of observations of planetary nebulae are presented with attention given to Herschel's observation of NGC 1514 (1790) and Huggins' observations (1864). The current status of observations of gaseous nebulae is also presented; consideration is given to the identification of nebular lines, physical processes, the radio continuum, recombination lines, infrared observations, optical spectra, and ultraviolet spectra.
