Two procedures commonly used in the literature to extract the correlation function from a finite sample of galaxies are compared in detail. By studying the correlation function in the CfA survey, significant differences are found between the estimation of the correlation function by these two procedures, even for a depth a large as 80/h-Mpc. The dependence of the correlation function on the depth of the sample as found by Einasto et al. (1986) using one of the two procedures is not obtained here.
