The nuclear region of NGC 1097 in the C-12O (J = 1-0) line has been mapped. This galaxy, one of the most conspicuous barred spiral galaxies, has a very bright nuclear ring (diameter of 1.6 kpc) of hot spots and H II regions, seen in H-alpha and in radio continuum VLA observations (20 cm, 6 cm). The high angular resolution (HPBW = 17 arcsec) achieved allows partial resolution of the ring. The major part of the CO emission comes from the ring. The detected H2 mass is abnormally high for such a nuclear region. The presence of such a molecular ring can be due to the secular action of the bar enhanced by the interaction with NGC 1097 A. Indeed, models of the gas flow in strongly barred galaxies indicate that the molecular clouds are rapidly gathered in an inner ring located at the inner Lindblad resonance when one is present.
