It is shown (1) how simple image parameters of astronomical importance can be derived from both the weighted and unweighted moments of the image pixel distribution and (2) that moment analysis serves as a good instrument in real-time image analysis. Data obtained from experiments using the COSMOS machine show the accuracy of parameters such as the centroids, area, orientation, ellipticity and the sum of the intensities that can be calculated from the zeroth, first and second moments of the image distribution. The accuracy of single and double image discriminants achieved with weighted second moments is also presented.
