There is no basic difference between the method of observation in the UV as compared to the visual region, and the primary scientific importance of UV observation is the extension of observable spectral range. The UV's richness in spectral lines, of which the resonance lines are particularly interesting, have allowed great progress in the study of hot objects, which emit most of their radiation in the UV. Highlights in the history of UV astronomy include the investigation of interstellar hydrogen by OAO-2, determination of density, temperature, and pressure in interstellar gas by the Copernicus satellite, and the analysis of hot stars with the IUE. Study of UV spectral lines allows the determination of stellar parameters like chemical content, effective temperature, gravity, and turbulent viscosity.
