Consideration is given to the observed selenographical distribution of the epicenters of deep moonquakes, which are known to be controlled by tidal stresses acting within the moon. The concentration of deep moonquakes under the Apollo seismic network and within 60 deg of the center of the near side of the moon is explained by a simple lunar model, in which the focal depths of the moonquakes are 940 km, the Q value is very high in the mantle above the moonquake zone and very low below the focal zone, and the number of focal zones per unit volume is proportional to the tidal potential affecting the area. Model predictions are shown to provide a reasonably good fit to the calculated locations of 47 deep moonquake epicenters indicating that the selenographic distribution of the epicenters is primarily controlled by tidal potential.
